An expungement is a type of lawsuit where a first time offender of a prior criminal conviction seeks to have the record of that crime sealed, therefor making the records of the crime unavailable for state and federal repositories. Despite being similar to a pardon, an expungement can, to an extent, make a conviction completely disappear like it never happened. A pardon, however, just excuses the offense, rather than “erasing” it.
